2010 marks a new era for the Darwin Symphony Orchestra - your orchestra.

Throughout its twenty years of service to the Northern Territory, the DSO has also become an important community icon.  Comprised of more than 70 volunteer players, a professional Concert Master, Principal Cello, Woodwind Leader, and brought together by Artistic Director and Conductor, Leif Sundstrup, this ‘pro-am’ community orchestra is recognised for taking its music to a long list of isolated regions in the Territory; to communities which rarely have the opportunity to experience a live symphony orchestra.

Since 1990, the DSO has performed in regional centres including Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Glen Helen Gorge, Groote Eylandt, Nhulunbuy and Jabiru, with many well known artists joining their performances. Some of these artists include John Williams, James Blundell and Wendy Matthews. The DSO has received two Brolga Awards, the award for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Culture from the Centre of Australian Cultural Research in 1995, and in 2001 was presented by TOAN (The Orchestras of Australia
Network) with the award for a community orchestra. In recent times, ABC Television produced a documentary on the DSO entitled Have Orchestra, Will Travel, which was broadcasted both nationally and overseas.

Through sheer hard work and commitment from its Musicians, Board, Artistic and Management personnel, and Volunteers, this non-profit incorporated association has won the respect and support of government and non-government sponsorship and maintained the highest standard of performances for local, national and international audiences alike.
