In its twenty years of service to the Northern Territory, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra has also become an important community icon.  Comprised of more than 70 volunteer players, a professional Concertmaster and other Principal players, this ‘pro-am’ community orchestra is recognised for taking its music to a long list of isolated regions in the Territory; to communities which rarely have the opportunity to experience a live symphony orchestra, as well as its regular concert appearances in Darwin.

It is with tremendous pleasure that I accept the appointment as Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and look forward to an enthralling journey in music and creativity. As Artistic Director of the DSO, I aspire to charm, mesmerize, and thoroughly captivate you through the performances of the Northern Territory’s own orchestra – a prolific ambassador of the performing arts for the local community and greater Australia.

The DSO and I are determined to provide a performance manifestation of marvellous adventure and diversity, exploring musical languages from the great classics to the unexpected, fusing symphonic music from ancient times with un-symphonic music of the future. The DSO is destined to become an orchestra of great diversity, providing you with every conceivable genre of music for your pleasure, experience, and memory.

It is with confidence that I invite both the dedicated audiences from the past and new audiences for the future, to join the DSO on its leap into a new era, an epoch dedicated to all whom long to be captivated, thrilled, and unashamedly seduced into a spell of enchantment. Let’s all come together and change community music into a musical community!

I look forward to meeting you all and sharing the immense power of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra – Your Orchestra.

Set in the Latin Quarter amidst a bitterly cold Parisian winter, Puccini’s masterpiece reveals the intense and delicate lives of four young bohemians: the amorous poet Rodolfo; Marcello the humble painter; our heroine Mimi, a poor seamstress; and Musetta, the flirtatious coquette.

La Boheme gushes with romance, with love found and lost and ultimately with tragedy. Puccini’s  achingly beautiful melodies illustrate his endearing characters as they create a tide of emotion that sweeps audiences away.

Amongst the elite group of favourite operas of all time, La Boheme proudly takes its place, as the  flame of a single candle and the flame of love struggling to remain alight.
Sung in English.
