Darwin Symphony Orchestra

Portrait of Kevin Davis AMIn its twenty years of service to the Northern Territory, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra has also become an important community icon.  Comprised of more than 70 volunteer players, a professional Concertmaster and other Principal players, this ‘pro-am’ community orchestra is recognised for taking its music to a long list of isolated regions in the Territory; to communities which rarely have the opportunity to experience a live symphony orchestra, as well as its regular concert appearances in Darwin.

At the end of 2009, its Founder and long-time Artistic Director, Dr. Martin Jarvis will be retiring from his position with the Orchestra.

After consultation with many of its stakeholders, a new leadership team model has been designed to ensure the long-term artistic and financial sustainability of the DSO, with clearly delineated roles and responsibilities. This team will consist of a full-time General Manager who will work closely together with a part-time Artistic Director. These positions will shortly be advertised on the DSO website and other relevant locations.

In a parallel process to the recruitment of these key positions, the Board is undertaking an extensive review across key aspects of the Orchestra’s operations. The outcome of the process will ensure the DSO is able to continue to engage the community of the Northern Territory through symphonic music.

Artistic Focus in 2009

Dr Martin W B Jarvis OAM FIMT FRSAThe Orchestra begins its Season, under the baton of guest conductor Warwick Potter, by celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn, one of the most important of the Romantic composers of the 19th Century. On Good Friday, and then again in November, to help celebrate their 25th Birthday, the Orchestra will perform with the Darwin Chorale, under guest conductor Nicholas Routley. And of course, 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, so we are part of that too.

Upcoming Performances

The DSO, in true Territory style, will engage some of the most recognised artists from around Australia (and internationally), commission and premiere new works, and collaborate with other Arts organisations to bring you a celebratory program of spectacular proportions. Coinciding with the bicentenary

of both Mendelssohn and Darwin’s births, the DSO’s own birthday year program has something for everyone.
