We celebrate Charles Darwin, after whom the city of Darwin was named, who was born 200 years ago. The DSO was founded 20 years ago; another special celebration and there are musical birthdays which are captured in our concert series.
During this year of celebration, partnerships are to the fore, including an Easter concert with the Darwin Chorale. With three (3) outdoor and three (3) indoor concerts in our evening series, as well as Sunday morning events at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory at Bullocky Point, there is music for all and at times to suit family and friends coming together to enjoy.
We sincerely hope you enjoy our 2009 program.
Emeritus Professor, Helen Garnett PSM
Chair, DSO

The Orchestra begins its Season, under the baton of guest conductor Warwick Potter, by celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn, one of the most important of the Romantic composers of the 19th Century. On Good Friday, and then again in November, to help celebrate their 25th Birthday, the Orchestra will perform with the Darwin Chorale, under guest conductor Nicholas Routley. And of course, 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, so we are part of that too.
The DSO, in true Territory style, will engage some of the most recognised artists from around Australia (and internationally), commission and premiere new works, and collaborate with other Arts organisations to bring you a celebratory program of spectacular proportions. Coinciding with the bicentenary
of both Mendelssohn and Darwin’s births, the DSO’s own birthday year program has something for everyone.
